Generalists vs. Specialists

The Founder Roundup Ep. 22

Generalists vs. Specialists

We shared this Tweet a few days ago and it led to an interesting discussion:Startups are often created by generalists who have a broad range of skills and are able to wear many hats in the early stages of a company's development. These individuals are able to identify a problem, come up with a solution, and execute on that solution in order to get the company off the ground. However, as the startup begins to grow and scale, the company will often need to bring in specialists who have expertise in specific areas in order to keep up with the increasing demand and complexity of the business. These specialists can help to ensure that the company is running efficiently and effectively as it continues to grow and expand. Some of our followers pushed back and argued that a company never loses its need for generalists. And I agree– as a company scales, there's no longer the same need for one person to wear so many hats. But, generalists' ability to adapt, fill gaps where necessary, and apply a diverse set of skills to problems are traits that a company will never outgrow. What do you think?

Welcome back to the Founder Roundup! We're still playing a bit of catch-up from the Holidays, so we're the featuring the last 2022 startup we haven't yet showcased in this Newsletter.I also have an exciting announcement. Check out the Community Corner for more details.

Weekly Wisdom

“Don’t be afraid of competition. I think many of us have this in our mind that we have to be the first mover and come up with these grandiose new things. At the end of the day, millions of people are thinking about ideas, but it's your ability to execute. If you have a competitive advantage or an inspired vision, you can make space for yourself in any market. The bar can be raised, and you can add value to it if you work hard enough. Don’t get analysis paralysis because you think someone else has already done it.”

Backseat Startup

In episode 13 of the Backseat Startup Podcast, we had Dan Keldsen, Co-Founder of Plexicam, on the show. Plexicam lets you position any webcam, anywhere, on any screen.

A technical founder asked whether they should bring on a business mind to help them build. Dan and I shared our thoughts, particularly how we thought this particular founder was too early to be thinking about that.
