The Founder Roundup
Consider the Hedgehog
Consider the Hedgehog
There is a saying attributed to the Ancient Greek poet Archilochus that goes "a fox knows many things, but a hedgehog knows one big thing." Despite a fox's speed, intelligence, and agility, they can't do much about a ball of spikes.
Many startups fail because they try to do too many things too soon. They don't have to beat the incumbent at everything they do. They just have to do one thing very, very well.
What is your company's "one big thing?" How can you nail it this week?
Welcome back to the Founder Roundup! October is my favorite month and I'm looking forward to fall activities.
Adam Folsom of Beeso.io startup studio won the referral contest with 7 referrals. Thank you to all who participated! We grew over 70% in the last month alone.
We had the pleasure of featuring two great founders last week. Check out their profiles below.
Weekly Wisdom
Founders must have conviction. If you know that what you are doing is going to make an impact, keep at it. Your job is to prove it.
Startup School
A big passion project of mine is to provide more resources to help startup employees understand their equity. Over the next few weeks, I will be dropping various blog posts on stock options, RSAs, RSUs, taxation, vesting, and other complicated topics.
I spent several months putting together a handbook on all things startup equity. I've made it available for free to the Startup Founder Daily community. Grab a copy here.
Should I drop out of school?
We had Allie Lawn of The Scientific Startup on for Episode 4 of Backseat Startup.
A Reddit user asked if they should drop out of school to pursue their successful freelance career. Luckily, Allie is a Business Professor at the University of Denver and provided some great advice.

Kimberlee Guido, Co-Founder of Mooch
Meet the Founder revolutionizing the event rental market. Kimberlee began her career in the music industry, managing stadium tour logistics for stars including Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and Usher.
From there, she joined Snapchat, running business operations for the CSO, Imran Khan. She later joined his next venture, Verishop, as employee #1. Now, along with her Co-Founder and husband Aaron, she is turning her attention to revolutionizing the event rental marketplace with Mooch.
Mooch is a peer-to-peer and business-to-consumer event rental platform that sources community surplus tables, chairs, dinnerware, etc. and promotes them as event rentals. Businesses and individuals have “invisible inventory” which meets the needs of those seeking rentals for their events.
This inventory is currently untapped. Mooch is here to make it accessible. Need an extra table for your holiday dinner? Your neighbor has it. Need 75 place settings for your wedding? The Church down the street has it. Need 300 folding chairs for your companies off-site? The hotel around the corner has it.
Kimberlee is building a new kind of event rental marketplace. Head over to their website to learn more.
Cyrus Kazi, Co-Founder of Quantibly
Meet the founder helping the impact sector deliver on its promises. In 2021, the UN requested $6B from Elon Musk to help reduce world hunger. When he asked to prove how the money would be spent to generate impact, there was no answer.
Quantibly is here to make sure these organizations are prepared. They provide a business intelligence solution that helps nonprofits and NGOs track and collate their impact data.
All this is accomplished in an easy to use platform. Thousands of hours of work are reduced, and the social impact can be seen and shared in real-time.
Cyrus has been working at the intersection of data and impact for over twenty years. He leads a team of underrepresented entrepreneurs with a single mission: help impact organizations help billions of people around the world.
Head over to their website to learn more about the company setting the data collection standard for the entire sector.
